ATV Trailer: Loading, Unloading and Driving Recommendations

In part one of this two-part blog series, we looked at some purchasing tips for those who are looking for a great trailer to transport items like ATVs and UTVs. Trailers are one of the top methods of transportation for such powersports vehicles, allowing them to remain covered and unblemished while you relocate them to any area you require.

While part one of our series looked at purchasing tips to help you select the ideal trailer for your needs, today's part two will go over some recommendations we can make on loading, driving and unloading the trailer in optimal ways.

Loading Tips

There are several things to keep in mind during the process of loading your UTV or ATV vehicles into a trailer:

  • Level ground and height: In order for your vehicles to be loaded and unloaded as easily as possible, it's best to ensure the trailer is parked on level ground. This will help reduce the risk of tipping or instability during the process.
  • Ramp securing: Once your vehicle is in place on the trailer, be sure to secure the ramps. This will help keep them from sliding during transit and potentially causing an accident.
  • Tie-downs: In order to keep your vehicles from shifting during transport, it's important to use tie-downs at key points. The front and rear of each vehicle should have at least one tie-down, with additional securing points if possible.
  • Weight distribution: Be sure to evenly distribute the weight of your vehicles on the trailer. This will help keep it stable and minimize any potential damage.
  • Parking brake on: All vehicles should have their parking brakes engaged while on the trailer. This will help keep them in place during transit.
  • Safety chains: In addition to the parking brake, all trailers should be equipped with safety chains. These provide an extra level of security in case the trailer becomes detached from the vehicle.

Trailer Driving Tips

While transporting any kind of trailer can be a bit tricky, there are some tips that can make the process much easier. For one, you should always drive slowly and carefully when hauling a trailer. This will help you avoid any bumps or jolts that could cause damage.

It's also important to be aware of your blind spots when driving with a trailer. Because of the added length, it's easy to misjudge your surroundings and end up in an accident. To avoid this, be sure to use your mirrors to check for cars and other obstacles in your path.

Unloading Tips

Once you've reached your destination, there are a few things to keep in mind when unloading your trailer. First, be sure to engage the parking brake and put the vehicle in park before attempting to unload.

Next, you'll want to remove the tie-downs and ramps from the trailer. Once this is done, you can slowly back the trailer up to the desired location. Be sure to keep an eye on your mirrors, as it can be easy to lose track of the trailer when reversing.

Finally, once the trailer is in position, use a jack or other lifting device to raise the front or rear of the trailer and then remove the wheels. This will allow you to easily slide the vehicles off of the trailer and onto the ground.
