Winter ATV Riding Checklist: Clothing, Supplies, Trails
In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some basic tips on how to safely operate your ATV this winter. While winter conditions create a few different safety hazards than other parts of the year, the proper items and approaches will allow you to enjoy your ATV throughout this season.
At Louisiana Power Sports, we're proud to offer not only a wide inventory of used and new ATVs and UTVs for sale, but also to assist clients with proper operations of their vehicles throughout the year. What are some additional tips we regularly offer clients on riding safely through the winter? Here's a primer.
Proper Warm Clothing
While safety equipment and vehicle modifications might be important considerations for winter riding, it's important not to forget about appropriate clothing. It's critical that your body is properly covered in layers, even if you're just taking a short ride to the local pond for some ice fishing or hunting.
For example, it's important to wear proper gloves for operation of the ATV controls. When buying new gloves, make sure they are snug enough to not fall off while driving. Additionally, we recommend thicker gloves with a waterproof rubber coating. This will ensure that your hands stay as warm as possible and can withstand the elements. You'll also want to consider wearing waterproof pants or boots to keep your feet dry and warm.
Emergency Supplies
While most people think of safety equipment when they consider winter riding, it's equally important to consider what you would need if something goes wrong. First and foremost, riding with a buddy is always recommended for safety. However, it's even more important if you're riding in the cold. One person could easily freeze up on the trails or be stranded after an accident.
What are some items that can help? We recommend a tow strap or rope. This can be especially useful if you get stuck in the mud, snow, ice or even trees! Additionally, make sure you always bring out all of your safety equipment when riding; don't assume that an extra flag is good enough to ensure someone will see you on the trail.
Stick to Trails
Both for your own safety and to respect other riders, sticking to trails in the winter is very important. First, you avoid having to drive across snow or any other terrain that can be harmful to your ATV. Second, you reduce the risk of damaging private property during your ride.
Ride in Low Gear
Especially if this is your first time riding in the winter, you'll want to consider riding low gears where possible. This reduces the number of times that your ATV needs to shift and can therefore allow you a smoother ride through tough conditions.
